Description
Decebalus was the last great king of the Dacians. Ancient sources present him as a feared enemy of Rome, but also as a valiant warrior.
Decebal is perhaps one of the most famous characters of Ancient History from the Carpathian-Danubian-Pontic area. The last king of the Dacians arouses fascination even today, especially after he was rediscovered in the 19th century by Romanian intellectuals and historians. Decebal is a character romanticized in some places, finding his place both in the pages of history books, of specialized studies, but also in literature or nationalist propaganda. As famous as Decebal is, he is also little known. If Decebal’s wars with the Romans are very well known, the personality and biography of the great Dacian king still remain a mystery. Moreover, there is only one clear, explicit reference regarding the personality and virtues of the Dacian king, namely in the “Roman History” of Cassius Dio, one of the most important sources, along with the Column, regarding the Daco-Roman wars.
